Mood board for style

Created by me, spoken about with group

I created a mood board on Pinterest to represent the style and the atmosphere we want to create with the contrast of the vicar in darker colours with the warm joyful colours of the fort. I spent time browsing through hundreds of images on Pinterest to find the ones that I thought fit the mood board both in colour but also as ideas for what we could use in our sequence such as the props of the rosary and the structure of the forts. The images of the outdoor little houses relates to later in the film when they run away and I thought it would be nice to have that link in the board as well.

Blue Is the Warmest Colour

overall: The film follows Adèle, a French teenager who discovers desire and freedom, an aspiring painter Emma enters her life. It charts their relationship from Adèle's high school years to her early adult life and career as a school teacher.

Much of the controversy was about claims of poor working conditions on set alleged by the crew and the lead actresses, and also the film's raw depiction of sexuality.

Plot:

Adèle is an 15-year-old high-school student. She passes an older woman with short blue hair in the streets one day and is instantly attracted. She sleeps with a boy from school but is dissatisfied and ends it. After constantly thinking about the blue-haired woman and later kissing one of her female friends, Adèle becomes troubled about her sexual identity. Adele is taken to a gay bar where she meets Emma again, and they become friends. Adèle's friends suspect her of being a lesbian and separate themselves from her. Adèle and Emma grow closer and kiss at a picnic, they later have sex and begin a relationship. Emma's artsy family is welcoming to Adèle, however Adele tells her conservative, working-class parents that Emma is her tutor for philosophy class. Their relationship grows tense as they have little in common. Out of loneliness, Adèle sleeps with a male colleague. Emma learns about the cheating and furiously breaks up with Adèle. Three years later, the two meet at a restaurant. Adèle has not moved on: she is still deeply in love with Emma.

Sexuality

Lesbian sexuality is one of the strongest themes of the film, as the narrative deals mainly with Adele's exploration of her identity in this context. However, the film's treatment of lesbian sexuality has been questioned by academics, due to its being directed from a straight, male perspective. One critic has suggested that the film is not a lesbian film, highlighting the exploration of bisexuality of the character Adele.

About the movie

Director and screenwriter Abdellatif Kechiche developed the premise for Blue Is the Warmest Colour while directing his second feature film. The film, originally planned to be shot in two and a half months, was shot in five months, from March to August 2012 with a budget of €4 million. Shooting took place in Lille as well as Roubaix and Liévin.

Significance of the colour blue

Blue Is the Warmest Colour is also filled with visual symbolism. The colour blue is used extensively throughout the film—from the lighting in the gay club Adèle visits, to the dress she wears in the last scene and most notably, in Emma's hair and eyes. For Adèle, blue represents emotional intensity, curiosity, love, and sadness.

LGBT and feminist response

The film received LGBT and feminist critical comment for the perceived dominance of the male gaze and lack of female gaze, with some reviewers calling it a "patriarchal gaze."

Similarities

Adèle's conservative, working-class family engaging in discussion over comparatively banal subjects to Emma's more open-minded, middle-class family, who focus their discussion primarily on more existential matters: art, career, life and passion. Perhaps one of the most significant differences between Adèle's and Emma's families is that Emma's is aware of their lesbian relationship, while Adèle's conservative parents are under the impression the women are just friends.

Our opening sequence is quite similar to this film with the set of conservative parents and them not fully agreeing with their daughters sexuality, however in ours there are 2 sets of parents who don't agree with the sexuality as it heightens the intensity as the love is more forbidden. Further, the 2 girls start as friends and then become more, which is also what our movie would show, and the opening sequence is showing them first taking the step as more than friends. The main difference of our pieces is that ours is slightly more darker with the exorcism, but there is betrayal in the fact that Adele cheats. Hopefully with our representation of lesbianism it's more accurate and captures the rawness of the sexuality, rather than the stereotypical blue hair.

Exorcism Research- written by Mia, disscussed by all

For the exorcism research, the first movie scene I looked at was called "The Exorcist". The scene I watched (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpyg94OzHK0) was completely different to the idea of my groups exorcism scene. The reason it is not similar is because of supernatural element. In this movie scene, the girl rises up into the air off of her bed, this is something we are not considering to do as we want to keep our exorcism realistic. We also don't have the budget to create a supernatural scene. The girl in "The Exorcist" is shown to be truly possessed, Our girl is not possessed however her parent view her sexuality as a sin. Something my group and I will take from this scene is the behaviour of the Priest. The priest behaviour is unpredictable and crazy as he frees the demon from the girls body. Our priest will behave in the same manner. The flicking of the water onto the girls body seen in this scene is something we want to remake and include into our scene.

The next movie I looked is called the seventh day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJThAgic45Q). I looked at this movie because it is another movie with exorcism regarding them going wrong. Specifically, in this movie it depicts an exorcism gone wrong, as the child burns to death. I chose this movie to show the intensity and dangers around an exorcism, as if not done properly it can have really big effects, such as death. Also, it shows that exorcism are not always the right way of conversion, because one of the 'fathers' is actual containing the demonic entity. The part that we are taking from this is the preparation of the exorcism, as we are trying to make it very realistic and really get the nervousness of the dangerous tasks. Also, in the first scene the boy's parents are in the room holding him down, we are using this because it makes it clear that this was the parents idea and they are a big part of the danger.

Story Board Draft 2

Made by me, discussed by group
numbers correspond with the updated shot by shot

Our story board has dramatically changed since our first draft because the idea of filming outside brought up issues for example if it was raining on shoot day and other factors that could affect the practicality of filming. We also decided we wanted to have a more innocent side to their relationship rather than setting it in a woods cabin while they are on the run we decided to change it to a fort in their bedroom to show how life was before they were found out which makes it feel secretive and intimate as well.

2) camera pans down to hands 3) girl 1 looking at girl 2 5) over shoulder priest, girl on bed shocked

7) girl 1 tucks hair behind girl 2 ear

Location Research

Blog post written by me but research by all

For my groups location, we started off planning to film half the sequence in a bedroom and the other half outside in the woods. This idea got quickly shut down by Adam and Tom as they said the weather was unreliable at this time of the year. We then as a group decided we would be better off filming in one room for the whole sequence. We decided we are going to rearrange the room to be more convenient and film the fort and exorcism at different times. First we will build the fort and film all the footage for the fort shots and then set up the room for the exorcism and shoot all the footage for that.

My group and I discussed possible locations for this and decided we would consider Caitlin room at home and the single rooms at Beatrice Webb house. We knew filming at Beatrice Webb could be more convenient as its only a 5 minute drive compared to Caitlin room which is a 35 minute drive away, meaning we would lose a hour and 10 mins from day of filming.

After we spoke about our possible locations, I went back to Beatrice Webb and Caitlin went back to her house and we sent in the images of possible rooms we would use.

Here are the options

BEATRICE WEBB HOUSE- These are the two rooms we are considering in Beatrice Webb.

this room

this room

We decided on the room above ^^^^^^

CAITLIN ROOM- This is Caitlin room at her house.

In todays lesson my group and I decided to go with a Beatrice Webb house room. The reason we did this is because even though Caitlin room is more homey, we though it was too much of a waste of time to go all the way there and then remove all of the objects surrounding her bed. The Beatrice Webb room is easier to get to and is already plain, which gives us the opportunity to do whatever we need to the room.

5th, 6th, 7th Group Meeting

 5th, 6th, 7th meetings

Over the past few lessons we have been developing our shot by shot sequence and breaking down the action. We included rough timings so we can meet 2 mins for the final product. We included lots of different camera techniques to keep the sequence interesting and keep the audience immersed in the sequence. We tweaked the shots and finalised the action that would be shown in each shot. We really took the time to think about the emotional connectiong between the two main characters to ensure it is believable and the audience to sense the love between them. We ensured the beginning started at a slower pace and gradually built up to a climax and suddenly came to a halt which would leave the audience wanting more and in a state of anticipation for the rest of the film.

Dialogue sequence - filming and editing

For this workshop we set up a short dialogue sequence and we each took turns setting up the shots and filming different sections. I was one of the actors in the sequence so I filmed the sections with Iside as the actor. I zoomed in on her eyes and then focused the camera and then zoomed out to frame the shot. I started with a collection of close up shots of her biting her nails and of her foot shaking to show she is nervous. I then set up the shot for my entrance but another member of our group filmed it. We started with setting up the wide shots because it meant that we would have establishing/master shots to fall back on. We then filmed the mid shots and finally the close ups.

This picture shows me setting up the shot to film Iside in the close up shots. Because of the previous camera workshops I knew how to set up by myself and correctly put the camera equipment together and set up the lighting and composition of the shot.

I wasn't there for the final editing stage but I am able to recognise the process of using the different tools on premier pro that would have been used to edit the material together. For example cutting the shots at different places and moving them around to find where they best fit on the timeline in the editing software Adobe Premier Pro. The video below is the final sequence after Lily edited it. After watching it I can see the moments that she chose to cut and fit together.

Fourth Group Meeting

 25/01/2022

Today we spoke to Tom to sort out the practicalities of our idea. We decided to change the setting from the woods to a den they made in their room with duvets, blankets, pillows and fairy lights, becuase the weather would be unpredictable. We could make the den in the studio or in the room we decide to shoot the exorcism in to show the contrast of how mood can change in the same space. We decided that at this point in the girls relationship it is after they had the internal realisation that they have feeling for each other and they are tentative about making a move and as the sequence progresses they get more confident and closer together. Our whole piece is focused on contrasting moods, emotions and atmospheres. We want this to accuratley represent lesbian relationships in the 90s and we found external research that we based the exorcism on a true story of a girls extremely religious parents who got the church to attempt to exorsice her lesbianism.

Second Practical Lesson

Camera Workshop 2

In this workshop we filmed a simple scene of one of us picking up and putting down a water bottle. We started with a wide shot and filmed the whole sequence then we proceded to do a mid shot of the actors face and filmed the whole sequence again. Finally we did a close up of the water bottle and filmed the whole sequence once more. Each time we changed shots we readjusted the camera by zooming all the way in then altered the focus so it was clear. For the mid shot of the actor and the close up of the water bottle we lowered the camera so that it was at the same height as the subject which makes the shot look more professional.

You shoot in wide and then procede to do your desired close up shots because if you shoot in wide then you always have that shot to start with and use as an establishing shot.

The rule of thirds adds interest to your shot compostion. It is where you separate the shot into nine squares and the rule of thirds is where you place the person or main focus of the shot in three corners of the squares.

Continuity is extremely important because it helps the audience follow the action that is going on in the shot. For example if two people are having a conversation and you cut to a different place or different position without a valid enough reason then it would throw the narrative off.

Following call outs is vital because it ensures the set runs efficiently, saves time and prevents mistakes. The call outs are clear and consise so that everyone understands them and knows what to do.

Marks are used so that between shots and takes there is a bit of tape on the ground so the actor knows where to stand so the scene continues seamlessly.

You film before saying action and after cut to ensure no content is lost.

You shouldn't watch footage back on set because it wastes time and can cause the actors to overthink their movements and acting skills.

The 180* rule is when there are two character or two objects or a character and an object and there is an imaginary line between the two of them. The rule is you can't cross that 180* line or else the shot would not be continuous and the character/object would be jumping around in different places with each shot.

Story Board Draft 1

 24/01/2022

Today our whole group was here! We all got together and spoke through our rough final idea. We have settled on my idea about the two girls and the exorcism. I read out the shot by shot and everyone inputed  their ideas and together we contiued to develop it. We then made a rough story board that included the basic outline of the opening title sequence. The story board will continue to develop in the future but for now it displays a rough idea of what we could see in the shots.

  1. a wide shot of the girls in a wood cabin or tent in the woods
  2. an extreme close up of their pinkies linking
  3. a close up of girl 1 crying and then zoom closer onto her eyes
  4. transition where the close up of the eyes cuts to the same position but back in the woods
  5. parents and priest standing in doorway
  6. girls laughing together
  7. girl 1 scuttling backwards
  8. one of the girls brushes hair behind the other girls ear
  9. brids eye view of her getting restrained to the bed
  10. close up of girl tracing circles on other girls arm
  11. mid shot of the mum nodding to the priest
  12. various close ups of the preists belongings e.g. a bible, cross, chalice with holy water etc
  13. side view of her struggling so both parents are visible at different levels/angels
  14. birds eye view of her struggling
  15. shot of the priest holding a cross over her body
  16. close up of priest mubling prayer
  17. mid shot of priest screaming prayer

  19. birds eye view of her lying there feeling numb
  20. very fast flickering edit of all of the previous moment that only takes a few seconds
  21. mid shot of girls looking at each other and saying I love you

Third Practical Lesson

 Editing practical

07/02/2022

Today we learnt how to edit videos on Premier Pro. We figured out what the abreviations meant for example V1 is video 1 and A1 is audio 1. We opened the rushes bin which is the raw, unedited footage. The folders are called bins because of how films were edited in the past. We then went through the footage and logged some of the footage, this is where you copy the shots into a 'log bin'.
Once the image is on the screen we used the blue scrubber to move through the footage and clicke 'I' to isolate the material we wanted to keep and dragged it to the timeline below. The timeline strips were too small at first so we learnt to click the + and - button to zoom in and out. It is far easier to edit when you zoom in because you can be more accurate. To cut the fottage up you click 'C' to change the cursor to the cutting tool and 'V' to go back to the selector cursor.
After learning all the technicalities we had a go at editing a scene together. Mat gave us the top tip to cut the footage right on the action before cutting to a different angle to create a smoother effect. In the end I was really happy with our test outcome and I feel confident that when our group comes to editing our final production we will have the skills we need.

Below is a video of our editing sequence.
