Today we all told each other each of our ideas that we had now broken down into a shot by shot sequence. We each told each other what we liked about each others and offered ideas of how to change it slightly to be more practical and to adapt to what we have available to film with. For example Mia's idea involved a grave yard and when Adam came around to give us feedback he mentioned how it could be seen as disrespectful to film at a grave yard so we would have to find a different way around that. A similar thing with Otto's idea where he said how whoever we cast as the role of the fighter would really have to look the part and it would be difficult to make everything look authentic as if he is really going off to fight. When it came to my idea he said that he didn't have much to say and that he liked it and thought it would work. I had previously spend quite a lot of time thinking about the logistics of actually filming it and what we will have available to us. We have developed my idea to include a lot of what the others in the group liked to involve for example having the exorcism in the opening title sequence when originally it had the fight with the parents and showed the argument taking place. We have all been keeping an open mind and I think that when we all agree on what idea to run with we will be able to all work together to make it work to the best of our ability.
Fist time setting up and exploring the film equipment
Name of camera – black magic camera
When handeling the camera and passing it to another person you say "yours" then "mine" to ensure comminication is clear so that the heavy equipmenet doesn't get dropped.
The spirit level is located on the front of the camera and ensures the camera is straight and in
the middle of of the tripod. You know this when the air bubble is in the middle of the cirlce.
To set up the tripod you unfold it out of bag, open the legs and
place it on the ground, unlock all the bottom levers and lift th whole thing up by pulling the top
of the tripod up, when you are happy with the height lock the levers again, then unlock the top levers
and do the same. After this set up the camera
To set up the rest of the kit
you take the camera out of the box ensuring you carry it near your body because
they can be heavy, push the button on the tripod that lowers the little knob
on the platform of the tripod then slide the camera onto the tripod and release
the button when it is in the middle. Then adjust the levers on either side for
the pan and tilt so that it sits in the place you require and gently lock the
levers so the camera doesn’t move. Remove the lens cap and put it back in the
box so you don’t lose it, then open the little screen and turn it on.
To set up your shot first
zoom as far as possible on the main target in the shot then focus the image and
zoom out to the desired shot size. You must do this for each shot because otherwise
the camera would lose focus on the different things within the shot and it
wouldn’t produce such a clean crisp image.
White balancing is when
you change the colour of the image so that it looks normal to us for example if
you are filming inside but then turn the camera to be outside the image will
appear a blue colour so it needs white balancing to look normal and vice versa
but coming in from the outside without white balancing would produce an overly
orange image. To do this there is a little symbol on the screen (wb) that has other
symbols for whatever environment you are filming in whether it be outside,
inside, in the shade, under fluorescent lights, under cloud and a custom
option. White balancing makes the shot look more professional because it is important to pay attention to details like that.
Exposure is how much light
there is and how bright the image is so a lower exposure would produce a darker
image and a higher exposure would produce a lighter more white image. To do
this there is a blue slider by the camera lens that slides up and down to
adjust the exposure. It is important to do this because if an image in overly
or under exposed you can’t see it clearly and it doesn’t look natural, it can
also be used to balance out higher exposer in the room or lower exposure in the
room depending on whether it is light or dark or set the atmosphere you want to achieve.
More pictures of my group of the day and I exploring the equipment:
The first shot is a close up shot of the hands of our main character. Sitting atop a hill/grassy area. The hands would be in wrappings and would appear to have blood on them. They would figet with their hands and slowly unwrap them.
Then cut to their face, their face would be sweating and they would be visibly exhausted.
Cut back to their hands, now unwrapped, we see the dried up blood.
A zoomed out shot of the them where we see their whole body, they fidget with their hands and caress their scars. They sigh and get up.
A follow shot of them walking inside a house, in a normal pace.
Another follow shot, with zoom following them towards the gym. Keep the focus on them as they walk, their parents are in the blurred out background appear to be trying to speak to him but their voices are drowned out.
A close up of their face, looking down as they enter the gym.
Zoom out as they shut the door behind them.
A still shot of them standing in front of the door and looking at a punching bag.
Close up shot of their shoes as they drop their gym bag.
High angle shot from the position of the gym bag as they get nearer to the punching bag.
Establishing wide shot of two girls backs to the camera in the centre of the screen with a shed or hut of some sort in front of them. No music just a few seconds of silence maybe a few birds chirping.
Zoom in on their hands and focus on their fingers touching for a few seconds - music starts to play - under the milky way by the church.
Cut to close up of girl 1 face red and tear streaked then see her head turn towards the door
Cross cut to the same girls eyes in the exact same composition but in the woods now and she smiles then pan down to her lips and smile then zoom out slightly so we see both girls looking at each other smiling.
Cross cut back to girl 1 room and in doorway we see three figures back lit to look ominous - her parents and a priest.
POV shot of them walking towards her
Quick cut back to them in the woods laughing
Eyeline match from previous shot? from parents POV and we see her backing into her bed
Close up (back in woods) of hand brushing hair behind ears and girl 2 close up of eyes
When she blinks cut to mid shot? of her parents hands grabbing her wrists to restrain her
Cross cut to them holding hands and one girls tracing circles on the back of the other girls hand
Cross cut to mid shot (priests pov) of parent giving a nod to the priest
Eyeline match to see priest nod back
Close up of him preparing the holy water
Cut to close up of girl 2 crying
Wide shot to show her struggling
Then birds eye view mid shot to see her struggle but then give up because it is useless
Close up of priest picking up a large cross
Wide shot with priests back to us on the left side so we can see the face of girl 2 he lifts the cross over her body
Close up of priests lips moving slowly in small mumbled prayer
Then zoom out to close up of his face and follow as he turns his head up and shouts prayers at the top of his lungs and this effort is visible despite the sound being muted.
Another close up of her sobbing but her body doesn't move like a typical exorcism because there isn't actually any evil in her and the parents are just being deluded
Close up of mothers face looking away and a tear streaking down her face
Close up of fathers face staring at her looking stern
Birds eye view of priest shaking her shoulders
Then mid shot from the side to see priest shouting in her face as she tries to look away
Sudden cut to her face looking numbly at the ceiling red and puffy from crying then slowly zoom out into a birds eye to see her lying spread out on her bed alone in a dark room we hear a sigh that fades over the top of the soundtrack
Then very fast editing of loads of different shots of them that were taking in the forest and part of the exorcism all going very fast sort of like a flip book
Sudden stop and cut to close up of their faces in the woods we see both of their faces in the shot looking at each other and one of them says i love you in a breathy voice and the music stops before this shot so it is silent with just the breathy i love you and then a moment where they still look at each other and then the screen goes to black and the title appears
Today we all got randomly
allocated into our groups. I am with Otto, Bea and Mia W. Mia was absent so it
was just the three of us. We first said how it was important that we all keep
an open mind with our ideas and allow each other to fully explain what they are
thinking and then allow others to input their ideas. I started with reading
through my ideas and we decided that my idea 2 would be really good but because
it is a sensitive subject it would have to be handled with care and need some
really good actors so we thought it would be a bit too much. Idea 4 we decided
that while everyone liked the idea the party setting would be too difficult to
replicate. Personally I said that my favourite is my idea 1 with the two girls
because it has a good balance of some gentle emotional connection shots with
action and a darker atmosphere shots. Bea's favourite was idea 3 with the girl whose
sister died and she investigates her death but she inputted that she thought it
would be good if the creepy guy was a jock and the opening title sequence had
shots of the world spinning for him after a failed attempted suicide and then
he kidnaps the sister and it turns out she is still alive or something
following that line. She also suggested that with my idea 1 she thought it would
be better if it was simplified a bit so you had the shots with their hands
touching interspersed with close up shots of the exorcism that happens later in
the film rather than the shouting match with the parents.
Overall I think it was a very
successful first meeting and we established that we would be honest with each
other and give constructive criticism and accept that everyone will have
different opinions and that is ok we just to remain calm and sort through
disagreements like adults.
Starts with two girls at a party and a guy is in the middle of them everything is light hearted then when they go to dance the girl realises her friends drink has been spiked and she sees them take her upstairs, by the time she gets up and finds a baseball bad shs is too late to to help her friend but she kicks the door down and obliterates the guys. They aren't dead but they are very injured. She gets a pen and writed on their arms saying what would happen if they ever did something like that again. She takes her friend home and looks after her. When she wakes up she is confused and asks what happened. She explains and then goes on to tell the story about how her sleezy boss raped her and rather than going to the police and getting no justice she tied him up and tattoed on his chest that he was a rapist and threatened to do much more if she ever saw a girl come near him. She works at a tattoo place and is a training tattoo artist. The girls set out to get revenge on any men that have raped women and attend parties acting all drunk and happy and test all of their drinks before having a sip. Then when they expect them to pass out they fake it and get to the point of the bedroom when they are held down and then the other girl comes in and teaches the guys a lesson. The movie would have the main aim to emphasise how the justice system lets thousands of women down when it comes to rape accusations and how there isn't enough educaion on how to prevent rape and what to do if it does happen to try and get as much evidence as possible. At the end of the film one of the girls gets arrested and we see a close up of her face looking at her friend saying that it was worth it.
Opening Title Sequence:
The party scene where they are sitting down with one of the girls clearly a bit drunk and we see half empty cups and then they go to dance when the other girl notices a group of guys looking over at them and they start moving towards them she quickly tests their drinks and realises her friend was spiked but by the time she turns around she can't see where they went so she finds the garage or somthing of that sort and grabs a baseball bat she walks up the stairs until she finds a locked a door and we see her swing the bat and a quick shot of her kicking the door down when the screen goes black and the title appears.
Two sisters who have always been thick as theives until one of them dies from allegedly killing herself but the sister knows this doesn't add up because she was happy, had good mental health, exercised etc. A week later a kid at their school in the same year kills himself. Her parents dismiss her theories as denial but she starts her own investigation with her best friend. When they are rummaging through her things and clearing out her socials they find texts, snaps, email, dms etc from this boy confessing his love but clearly she did not reciprocate and told him to leave her alone and stop following her all the time. Eventually after more digging they find a letter or something from the boy saying that he killed her and then himself so that they could be together in death becuase she didn't want him in real life. Throughout the film there is flashbacks of her and sister playing, laughing, hanging out, crying together after break-ups etc. After coming to the conclusion that he killed her she thinks that she would feel fulfilled but she doesn't and now she has to actually deal with the grief of the loss of her sister we see her break down and then cut to the future when she is grown up and see her looking at a picture of her sister as if sharing the moment with her.
Opening title sequence:
Old home videos and pictures of the sisters when they were children interspersed with close ups of flowers, eye's with tears in them, coffin handles etc but slightly obscure so the viewer isn't entirely sure of the location then the title comes up and cuts to one sister standing in front of a coffin.
About mental health and the severity of it while still showing the audience that recovery is possible and that things do get better. This whole section of the story is told with cuts to a therapists office as she tells the therapist the story. A girl with sever depression has a suicide attempt but her parents find her and rush her to hospital where she gets revived, because it was such a serious attempt she just manages to get into cahms and there is a scene where they tell her she isn't exercising enough and that she should have more cups of tea etc because that is an accurate representation of what cahms is like. A scene where her best friends notices her scars and she opens up about how she is strugling and her friend comforts her. She comes home at one point and walks up to her room where she gets straight into bed she is fine for a moment but then breaks down. Her mum comes up the stairs and tells her that he siblings are going to tennis and that she has to join them for the 'fresh air and exercise' she refuses and the argument just increases with the mum asking her what she is supposed to do if she doesnt want to help herself and that she doesn't understand and then she says that she can't go because if she goes then she won't be able to hold on and she will go as well. They hug but you can see the girl trying to hold in her sobs over the mums shoulder. Because cahms didn't work her family send her to a private therapist who is nice but is just very into spirituality and doing yoga and helping you go to your happy place which doesn't really work. Then we cut to her new therapist who she is getting along with and telling the story to, at the end of the session the therapist says that they should continue seeing each other but she is going to refer her to a phsychiatrist. We then follow her story to the psychiatrist where she gets diagnosed with sever depression and prescribed medication. There is a few montages of her mood throughout the next weeks while she is on the meds and we see that the first one prescribed had bad side effects so they had to start again but the second one appeared to work well. We see her slowly getting better, becoming more social, still a few shots of her crying, she starts smiling and making her bed, cleaning her room and finally packing for university. Still fighting becuase the fight never goes away but she knows that she will live and enjoy life.
Opening sequence:
Therapist asking so where should we start, then close up of her face and when she blinks we cut to a shot of blood dripping off a bath then cut to her in a depressive episode lying in bed eyes swollen from crying looking numb becuase all the tears have come and there is nothing left. Then back to her in therapy 'i dont know' then therapist 'lets start with a few months before the attempt, what where you feeling did you plan how you would do it' then'i just felt worthless, empty and that whole inside me hurt, like actually physically hurt' - this is a voice over to her crying in bed hunched over as if in pain close up on face and birds eye view. Quick cut to legs in red bath water, drips of blood on the sides, blades floating in the bath or on the side. therapist 'how long have you had suicidal thoughts while she says this the camera in close up on her face and eyes, cut to wet hair in the bath then birds eye view of her in the bath arms by her sides in a dress. Back to her face, she stutters 'i...' cut to her as a little girl looking at the knife holder in her kitchen. 'a long time, its been like this for a long time' screen to black title comes up credits either just before or during the opening.
There are these two girls who are new friends that formed their friendship extremely quickly and they spend lots of time at each others houses, their parents know each other but only in the sense that they chat when each girl goes to the others house. The girls are 17 so can't leave home quite yet. The have a sleepover together as they have many times before and while they are watching a film on one of their beds their fingers slowly touch each other and then their legs and they just slowly move closer to each other, they look at each other and kiss but pull away suddenly because both girls have families that won't accept them and for moset of their lives they have been living in denial and so if they accept that they love each other then it will feel real and have consequences. The pretend the kiss never happened and continue as normal until one night where they have both been drinking and they kiss again and this time neither of them pulls away. In the morning one of the girls says that they can't ever do that again and she asks the other girl to leave. She leaves crying because she was just beginning to accept them possibly being together in secret. The other girl then feels bad and goes over to her house and when she answers she appologies and kisses her right as her mother walks in from the kitchen. Everyone is speechless for a second and then the mother asks what they were doing and as they start to deny it that is when the shouting begins. The mother calls the father down and tells the girl to go home becuase they need ot talk with their daughter. The first thing the mother does is phone the other girls parent to tell them what they saw and when she gets home her parents arent there yet so she thinks she has time to come up with something to say but then her door opens and her parents are there with a priest, she has no idea what is going on, her mother is crying and praying under her breath while her father can't even look at her. Two other people walk in and restrain her while she struggles, the priest then performs an exorcism on her trying to expel the 'demon' inside her. Meanwhile the other girl is trying to justify herself to her parents but all they can say is that it is unnatural and that it is all in her head and she needs to be cured. The argument builds until the father slaps her to shut her up. She goes up to her room cries and sleeps. She wakes up to her mum coming in and telling her to get dressed and that they are taking a trip. As she heads downstairs she sees the pamphlet for conversion therapy and runs back up the stairs packs a bag and jumps out of her window. She runs to the other girls house and climbs up to her window to find her on her bed tear streaks down her face and full of bruises she enters her room and packs her a back telling her they are getting out of there. They run away to a little place they have in the woods where they finally feel like they can be themselves. After a few days they hear the police calling for them on a search, there is a chase sequence with both the parents and the police but they manage to escape and there is a moment of eye contact between them and their parents before they continue. They are free.
Opening title sequence:
The first shot is of their backs facing the camera with a shed that they decorated in front of them with no music the camera then pans and zooms in on their hands. Then various close ups of their hands, fingers touching, tracing circles on one another, silent laughter, close ups of them looking at each other, of their eyes, all of this is then interspersed with clips of the argument with the parents and tear streaked faces, flashing lights of the police cars. All of this has a gentle but still happy soundtrack and all of the audio from the shots are muted. Maybe there could be a few clips of dialogue if it works with the song in the background. The title would be right at the start with a few of the main credits and then the rest of the credits would be at the bottom of the screen while the rest of the action takes place because if the movie where to carry on the screen would go blank after a close up of one of their tear streaked faces and they let out a sigh that is diegetic and then cut to the begining of the film where there might be a voice over of telling the story of how they first met but it doesnt continue throughout the film and it only picks up again right at the end when they are walking away from their parents are their homes saying something about being free to be themselves.
I really liked this opening title sequence because of the simplicity of it. The use of lights, fog and hands pushing against a clear material create a uneasy atmosphere because it gives the impression that someone is trying to escape. The intensity of it starts relatively slow and builds when the lights start flashing and the fog appears which makes the scene more chaotic this then settles when they start breaking out of the shell they seem to be in. I like that there was variation in intensity because it keeps the audience engaged. Even though this one was part of the 'thriller' section I think it comes off as more scifi which I prefer to horror or thriller. I especially love the use of lights, I think when natural lighting is used outside for example the filming ends up looking like amateur work so I prefer when colours are used or filters are placed over the images because it will be what the audience members are used to seeing. I'm not sure if I prefer the title to come at the begining or the end because if it came at the start then the audience will be able to have a rough idea of what the genre might be like but if it came at the end then it would keep them guessing so I'm not sure where I stand on that. I enjoy scifis but I think for my opening title scene I would prefer to do something, not neccissarily real as it could have supernatural elements like witches, but more real world and not in the studio but I would definitely change the colour of the shots somehow.
A film that explores the
connection to earth through witchcraft and various occult practices. A girl
that is born into a witch family with her two mothers and is part of their
local coven. She tried to deny her powers for most of her life and push them down
hoping they would go away because she was scared of what they would do - after
an incident when she was younger and her brother died where she blamed herself
for her release of power even though it wasn't entirely her fault and there was
other components in play where the power hungry witch that doesn’t belong to a
coven attempted to draw her power out of her. The story would unfold with her
accepting her power and learning through the coven how to use herbs and such
for healing and how to connect to the earth and respect it. For an action scene
where she finally understands how to use her power and how strong she is she
spellbinds the greedy witch so that they cannot practice anymore. She uses
nature to get in touch with her ancestors and spirit guides. for a love plot
line maybe she meets a boy from a different coven and he also teaches her what
he knows and they slowly form a close relationship.
The opening title sequence would consist of close up images of her
hands, herbs hanging up, old large books, close up of her eyes and face and the
boys face and eyes, old houses, candles, there would be a non-diegetic
soundtrack behind and the images would overlay each other so that you can see
multiple at a time but the opacity is turned down for example with each of the
characters eyes as they each looks up the images and overlayed so they appear
to be looking up at each other. A good example of this is the opening title
sequence to 'a discovery of witches'.
The documentary talked
about all of the connections underground and how trees and plants actually
communicate and help each other when they need extra water etc, this got me thinking
about connecting to the earth and how much we don’t yet know about the earth.
They said that we know more about space than we do about the fungi that live
underground connecting every life form together. There was an amazing part that
showed a form of fungi that actually absorbed and oil spill and turned it into
fuel for it to live therefore un-polluting the area.
Most of the opening title sequences are dark thrillers/horrors which I think would be fun to film but I think it is difficult to be original because a lot of horros have the same concept and have already been done.
I really like the ones that have minimal to no dialogue because it makes it seem more like an actual opening title sequence with various close ups and perhaps introducing one or two characters but keeping it to a minimum. The other thing I noticed it that the title sequences that have altered the colour of the image look more professional that those that haven't. I think it looks better when there is a filter over the image if it is filmed outdoors for example to change the saturation, brightness etc to fit the atmosphere of the piece. The simpler ones worked better than the ones that were filled with action and tried to put as much as they could into it. There were some that I got a bit bored of so I think it is important to have a captivating series of images right at the start so the viewer doesn't lose interest. I don't particularly like the ones that have guns featured in them because I just found it to be rather boring and over used. I like the ones that use interesting editing feautures because it adds that final touch that makes it seem more professional with overlapping images, different paces, dissolves etc. I enjoyed the different genre ones like the scifi one of the people in cocoon like structures waking up and trying to escape. I would definitley like to do a different genre to horror or thriller and instead do a love story, coming of age story or something that has a message to it that young people can connect to. The other ones that I enjoyed were where characters are carrying out an action and the camera takes various close ups of the different objects and the person.
This is a good example of where the colour in the picture has been changed to add atmosphere. -->
This opening title sequence called 'chrysalis' is one of my favourites because I think they way they used the lighting was really clever and very little is given away which leaves the audience with questions but they still managed to set the scene and clearly communicate the genre.

What I find interesting and visually appealing about his work:
He does a lot of designs where he mixes reality with drawings and other effects which makes it visually engaging because it is something the audience members don't see in real life which makes them curious.
Most of his work has titles or images that come out at the audience to reveal something or change the scene which draws the audience in.
Some of the titles he has done turn into butterflies or appear through a sparkle which will likely link to the context of the film and gives the audience a flavour of what is to come.
He layers a lot of images and moves the text around the screen in interesting ways that are often satisfying to watch.
Kyle Cooper's opening title sequence of 'American Horror Story - Hotel'
The opening title sequence of AHS hotel is incredibly enganging and while the images are chilling and shocking the audience feels as though they can't look away and are drawn to it through some type of morbid curiosity. The first scene where the camera is focused on the hands in the wall is interupted by flashes of white light and the editing jumps around so that the hands change possition in a jerky motion. The camera then jumps out so that the audience look through a peephole so the hands are in the centre of the shot and when they reach out suddenly it acts as a jump scare. The fast paced editing and constant flashing and jumping images along with the jarring soundtrack assaults the audiences senses and actually becomes hard to bear and is severley unsettling. I think it is very effective because it perfectly introduces the series and sets the tone. The red glowing text reflects the signs used outside hotels and the use of excessive amounts of blood indicates what the series will involve. The unusual images of children and creatures climbing out of beds and the fitful mmovements creates an uncomfortable feeling in the viewers stomach which makes them apprihensive for what it to come.
These two news stories gave me the idea of a film where there
is a girl, 16-17 years old, who has been passed through the foster care system
time and time again and is now being kept in an unsuitable housing situation in
an abandoned building or above a supermarket. There will be a little love story
arch between her and another girl being kept there. I would focus on their stories,
trauma, mental health etc. A new child gets brought in who is a little boy
around 4 years old and they look out for him. At some point one of the girls
has to leave because a foster place opened up for them and we cut between her
experience there and the other girl with the child. The girl at the foster home
actually has good people looking after her and they help her get a job etc to
make enough money to look after herself when she turns 18. At the end the
couple move away into the forest and live a ‘cottage-core’ life with their
little boy whom they have adopted.
The opening title scene:
Wide establishing shot of a girl sitting crouched over in an
abandoned building, hood up, rain pouring down, various different extreme close
ups of her hands and face, edit the colour of the shot to make it darker and
gloomier, sound track in parallel to the scene maybe she is wearing headphones, no dialogue and minimal action just the right amount of different images to keep the audience guessing and asking themselves questions.
Or
Beeping of supermarket and supermarket noises and movement then
camera turns up and moves through the ceiling to see the girl and then close
ups like above but this time the girl is in a corner of a dark room with other children around her but she is clearly slightly separated trying to get some space and have a break.

Making tracks
As Lucy and Chris set off on an interrailing trip, they
look forward to rolling countryside and historic city centres.
At first it's all skinny dripping, adventure and nights out.
But relationship problems rise to the surface as an attempt at sex on a train
goes disastrously wrong - and when it becomes clear that Chris believes an 'al
fresco' is a salad.
Chris hides his emotional repression and thoughtlessness
behind a wall of childish behaviour, whilst Lucy begins to consider her future.
As the trip forces the couple into close quarters, can their relationship
survive?
